The 2021 $4,950-added ERCHA/NRCHA Autumn Show in Travagliato, Italy, concluded the 2021 European Reined Cow Horse show season.67 riders and 80 horses met to compete during the weekend vying for the Autumn Show Championships and Regional Finals awards.

Winning the $2,500-added Open as well as the $200-added Limited Open Championship was Federico Fanti of Italy riding 5-year-old WR Smart N Slinky, an American Quarter Horse mare sired by WR This Cats Smart out of Chupikas Real Jewel for proud owner Massimo Morenghi.

The duo, who also scored the highest in the herd work (73 score), added to the 71.5 in the rein work closed the cow work class with a 73.5 score for a total composite of 218, which secured them the win! “This was an incredible and tough week because at the same time I decided to also show in the NCHA Futurity in Cremona. The Autumn Show worked out perfectly from day one during which there was the rein work class which is always my weak point. Getting to the last day fence work class with an advantage over two European Cow Horse legends as Giovanni [Campanaro] and Markus [Schopfer] was really an amazing feeling, just as it has been all this week!”.

With a 217 composite, reserve honors in the Open division went to Giovanni Campanaro aboard Loris Paone’s Shesa Genuinelypepto, an American Quarter Horse mare sired by Oaks Lone Pepto out of Genuinely Snapper.

Sharing Reserve honors with a 211 composite in the Limited Open division was Pietro Tuberga riding R J One More Rooster (MR Onemore Max x Chinese Rooster), owned by Azienda Agricola Adriano Ponsetto, and Maria Giulia Fanti with Claudio Ferrami’s SA Ret Hickory N San (Ret Great N San out of  Hickory Sanote).

2021 ERCHA/NRCHA $500-added Non Pro and $100-added Amateur Autumn Show
The Championship was for Marie Mura riding her own Woody Choco Pepto (Stylin Dual x Mamaws Little Pepto). The French rider and her horse won with a 213.5 composite score (rein work 71, herd work 71, fence work 71.5).

“I still cannot believe I won! I bought Woody Choco Pepto as a yearling from a French breeder, William [Coulomb] literally a small foal hidden in a paddock! We let him grow up and at age 2 we broke him. Since he was not a big horse, we decided that he would become my horse; he was more a ‘girl-size’ horse. He was very easy and he immediately showed us he had the quality to be a good cow horse! I started showing him when he was 3 in France. The year after we started to travel to Italy for bigger events. My mistakes and our lack of experience in the past never allowed us to achieve good results! This year, for his fifth birthday, I really wanted to show him in an aged event: The Hackamore Classic. I asked Markus Schopfer for help with his training in a bosal—something brand new for me and Choco. The Autumn Show was the last event of the year but above all the last special event for Choco!
The first day we did good in the rein work. I was a little stressed in the herd work since we were leading the ranking and the level of the horses was really high. The cows were great, and turn backs also, so I was very happy when a 71 score appeared on the leaderboard and I realized we were still at the top of the standings with a half-point lead. In the Fence Work, with all my competitors riding big, powerful horses, and me with my little Choco and his small legs, I really didn’t think I could win against them! But he’s a fighter with a big heart and that made the difference! And I had the chance to raise a trophy that I never imagined I could win!
I’m blessed to share my love for horses with my husband [William Coulomb], to have my family behind me who takes good care of my son when we’re out showing, all the great persons that work with us and a bunch of friends always ready to cheer for us! My dream is to have a horse I can ride in the respect of traditions, so next year me and Choco will start working in two reins, plus I’m practicing in roping too (which is my other big passion) because there will probably be a special event in France with the steer stopping in a cow horse show. So, during this winter break, I’ll definitely bring out my ropes!”

One point behind Gabriele Poli Barberis clinched the Reserve Championship with Purrsuasion under the saddle. The 4-year-old American Quarter Horse, owned by his family’s Ranch Az. Agricola Samisa Ranch, is sired by Meteles Cat and out of Spooks Twilight.

Nicola Succu riding Alessia Campi’s A Nite With Marilyn (Gunners Special Nite x LDL Marilyn Chex) won the Non Pro Limited Championship with a 208.5 composite score.

“I had a lot of fun at this show where there were a lot of horses from other European countries,” said Succu. “I was hoping to be able to do a little better in fence work, without the penalties I would have been able to place well in the Non Pro too. However, I am very satisfied. Cow Horse is a demanding discipline; you need a lot of training and this was my first show season in this discipline. I know I still need a lot of experience and I will take advantage of the winter break to ride as much as possible. This horse passion is so big that whenever I can, work permitting, I ride. My mare is a 4-year-old, trained by Giovanni [Campanaro], who together with Giacomo Caruso I would like to thank very much for everything. Next year the intention is to compete in the Derby, and at the same time work on the other horse I own, a 3-year-old that could compete in the Open Futurity with Giovanni in the saddle.”

Reserve honors went to Eleonora Terzi aboard Luca Terzi’s Cap Bet Rey Boon (Playful Bet x Bet Yer Reys). The duo closed the show with a 205.5 score.

Peter Trixner of Austria placed second with a 132.5 composite (rein work 67, fence work 65.5) riding his own CR Tuff Boon Pickens (Woody Be Tuff x CR Dees Boon Meow).

Karl Simon of Austria placed first in the ERCHA/NRCHA Beginning Fence Work with his own Bricks Smart Player (Jac O Rima x Avril Smart Play) between the reins.
