As one of 12 riders in the star-studded draw to record a qualified ride, Lima’s top marks were earned aboard Cut The Cord (Kruger Bucking Bulls) for a massive 88 points.
For his efforts, the Brazilian earned a check for $800 in addition to 50 world points.
Looking to qualify for the third consecutive PBR World Finals of his career, the round win allowed Lima to gain ample ground in the world standings, rising from No. 103 to No. 83. He is now 481.66 points outside of the Top 35.
Reigning PBR World Finals event winner Marco Eguchi (Poa, Brazil) finished Round 1 second courtesy of an 87.5-point ride on Hookasaurus (Triple R Bull Co.), earning him $600 and 25 world points.
Eguchi remains No. 9 in the world.
With all of the world’s Top 4 competing at the Maine Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour stop, all eyes were focused on No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme (Ribas do Rio Bardo, Brazil), No. 2 Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana), No. 3 Chase Outlaw (Hamburg, Arkansas) and No. 4 Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil).
Leme and Outlaw both recorded 8-second efforts, with Outlaw leading the contingent with a third-place result in the opening round.
Riding Blockbuster (Triple R Bull Co.) for 87 points, the “CEO of Outlaw Nation” netted $400 and 10 world points.
Outlaw remains No. 3 in the world, now 1,171.66 points behind No. 1 Leme, but inched closer to eclipsing Lockwood for the No. 2 ranking, now a mere 145 points behind the Montana man.
Hot on his spurs, Leme finished the opening round fourth. He covered Tropic Thunder (Kruger Bucking Bulls) for 86.5 points, earning $200, but finishing just outside of the points.
For both Lockwood and Vieira, their nights came to an end short of the 8-second buzzer.
Lockwood was bested in a heart-breaking 7.78 seconds by Hurricane Tested (Kruger Bucking Bulls), while Vieira was bucked off by Shadow’s Recruit (Kruger Bucking Bulls) in a quick 3.44 seconds.
Rounding out the Top 5 was Rookie of the Year standings leader Ezekiel Mitchell (Rockdale, Texas) and Dener Barbosa (Paulo de Faria, Brazil) who tied for fifth after recording matching 86-point rides. They covered Grey Ghost (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) and Just AL (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls), respectively.
