Joao Ricardo Vieira Earns Bad Boy Mowdown Opening Round Win

Vieira Collects 20 World Points to Close No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme’s Lead

Keeping his early-season winning ways going, Brazilian João Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil) took home the Round 1 win at the 2020 Bad Boy Mowdown inside Simmons Bank Arena, on the banks of the Arkansas River. The veteran Vieira was able to make it to the 8-second whistle aboard Crossover (GT Bucking Bulls) in section six of action on night one of two. Masterfully conquering his bovine counterpart, Vieira was marked 89.5 points for his efforts, good enough to hold off Colten Jesse (Konawa, Oklahoma) by 2.25 points.

Vieira earned $3,580 and 20 world points with the round win, closing World No. 1 Jose Vitor Leme’s (Ribas Do Rio Pardo, Brazil) lead to only 149.75 points. Vieira still sits in the No. 3 spot in the world heading into Round 2 on Saturday night. The aforementioned Colten Jesse took the lead late in Round 1, riding in section five, ahead of Vieira. Jesse was the part of Experiment 626’s (Rickey West Bucking Bulls/Hatcher Porter) night that turned out best, as the two athletes combined in perfect harmony to the tune of 87.25 points.Jesse’s second-place finish earned him $2,750 on the night, as well as 10 world points. The Oklahoma cowboy is now No. 8 in the world standings.
The man in third place after Round 1 is Unleash The Beast (UTB) rookie Joao Henrique Lucas (Bastos, Brazil). Lucas rode his way into the Top 3 in the round aboard Dirty Sancho (Blake Sharp/Koe Wetzel/High Voltage Cattle), with an 86.25-point trip. Along with nine world points, Lucas added $2,000 to his bank account on night one of the event. Lucas is now the No. 30 bull rider in the world heading into night two.
Claudio Montanha Jr. (Pacaembu, Brazil) continued the South American dominance in Round 1, finishing tied for fourth. Montanha held on until the 8-second whistle after his bull Hellboy (Halpain Bucking Bulls) burst out of the chutes, and was marked 85.25-points. Montanha earned $1,075 on the night, and 7.5 world points. Matching Montanha’s intensity was another veteran of the UTB tour, Ramon de Lima (Rio Branco, Brazil). Lima was tasked with Choctaw Bingo on opening night, and was up to the test, earning an 85.25-point ride when he hit the dirt as the crowd erupted inside Simmons Bank Arena.Lima ended his night like Montanha, with 7.5 world points and $1,075 in his pocket.
Friday night included the American Bucking Bull Inc. (ABBI) Classic event in conjunction with Round 1. An ABBI Classic competition is the next step in a young bovine’s competitive career that involves bucking with a rider.
Kitty Hawk (Bob & Jeri Adams/D&H Cattle) sealed the top spot of the night with 90.4 points for $10,394 in earnings. Crossover (GT Bucking Bulls) posted 88.2 points for a second-place finish and $6,668 after carrying Joao Ricardo Vieira to the high-marked ride of the event. Midnight Rock (Cord McCoy/Pioneer Bulls) ended up third after predominantly leading the event with 88 points. The bovine picked up a check for $4,903.Rump Thumper (M Rafter E/Gary Keel) took fourth place with 87.4 points for $3,922, while Homegrown (Cord McCoy/Chad Reese) rounded out the Top 5 with 87 points for $3,334.Round 2 and the championship round from North Little Rock will begin tomorrow, March 7 at 6:45 p.m. CT. CBS Sports Network will broadcast all the action at 8 p.m. ET.
