Tuesday, June 11, was dedicated to Open Derby riders completing the second phase of the preliminary round - the herd work. The National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack & Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby, presented by Cats Picasso, is one of the largest and most prestigious events for 4- and 5- year-old reined cow horses. Shown two-handed in a snaffle bit or a hackamore, horses are judged in three preliminary events: rein work, herd work and cow work. Top scorers from the preliminaries will advance to the clean-slate finals on Saturday, June 15, for a chance to win the coveted title of 2019 NRCHA Derby Champion and a share of the more than $340,000 in total payout.

The second day of the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack & Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby, presented by Cats Picasso, is complete. Metallic Cat, at 14, the youngest living stallion on the Top 10 list of All-Time Leading NCHA Sires, leads 2019 standings by a wide margin – $1,003,806 to Kit Kat Sugar’s $642,153, for second-place among sires of 4-year-olds, and $1,070,508 to Dual Rey’s $454,230, for second-place among sires of 5/6-year-olds. Thirteen stallions, however, share the limelight with Metallic Cat, so far, in 2019.

New regulations prohibit CBD oil for use in APHA competitions
Cannabidiol—commonly known as CBD oil—is now classified as a Class 2 drug by the Association of Racing Commissioners International. As such, it is considered a forbidden substance by APHA and is prohibited for use in horses competing in APHA-approved events, per rule SC-085.C.1 in the APHA Rule Book.
